Protection dog breeders: what to ask before you buy

Buying a protection dog is one of the biggest decisions a family makes. The right breeder makes it safe. Here are the eight questions we would ask, and how TYR answers each one.

The questions

8 questions to ask any protection dog breeder

Ask them by phone or video call. A good breeder answers each one clearly and does not rush you.

  1. 1

Where are the dogs raised, and who do they live with?

What to look for. Look for dogs raised inside a home with people, not left in a kennel until the day they are sold. A dog that grows up around family life learns what normal looks like, and that is what lets it spot what is not normal.

How TYR answers. Our dogs are raised in the family home of Rui and Sandra Navarro in Portugal, and they live with the family.

  2. 2

Who trains the dog, and how?

What to look for. Ask for the name of the trainer and how long he or she has done this. Then ask what the dog is trained to do in real life, not only which sport titles it has.

How TYR answers. Rui Navarro has more than 25 years of experience with dogs and has placed hundreds of dogs with clients around the world. Every dog is finished with our own method, the Real Defense Protocol, which prepares the dog to recognize and respond to a real human threat.

  3. 3

Can I see the exact dog working?

What to look for. A photo is not enough. You should be able to watch the dog you would actually receive, in training, before you decide.

How TYR answers. Each available dog has its own videos, and you can see the dogs in the private catalogue and on our videos page before you enquire.

  4. 4

Does the dog stop when I say stop?

What to look for. This is the question that matters most. A dog that cannot be called off is a risk to your family, however impressive it looks.

How TYR answers. Every TYR dog has advanced obedience on and off leash and an immediate off-switch on a verbal command. We use the e-collar only as a training tool, and the dogs are delivered without needing it.

  5. 5

How will the dog live with my children, guests and pets?

What to look for. Ask how the dog was exposed to children, visitors and other animals, and ask to hear about the temperament of the parents or the line.

How TYR answers. Because our dogs grow up in a real home, they are used to children, guests and other animals. Tell Rui who lives in your home and he will help you choose the right dog for it.

  6. 6

What is included in the price?

What to look for. The price should say what you get: the dog, the training, transport, the handover and what happens if something goes wrong. Be careful with a low price that leaves these out.

How TYR answers. Our fully trained dogs start from $20,000, and each dog is priced individually. Hand delivery to your home is included, with a handover of at least 2 days. Every dog comes with a health and training guarantee backed by a contract.

  7. 7

What happens after the dog arrives?

What to look for. A good breeder is still there after delivery. Ask who you call, and whether follow-up training is offered.

How TYR answers. You keep direct contact with Rui. Follow-up visits are available once a year or every 6 months, and they are charged separately.

  8. 8

    Will my purchase stay private?

What to look for. If privacy matters to you, ask the question before you share details about your home and your family.

How TYR answers. We never film or photograph our clients, their homes or their handovers, and we never publish client names.

Warning signs

Five red flags

  • A price that does not say what it includes.
  • A "guarantee" with nothing in writing.
  • Only sport titles, with nothing about real life.
  • No video of the exact dog you would receive.
  • A dog that cannot be called off when it is excited.

Questions

Protection dog breeders: common questions

What does a protection dog breeder do?

A protection dog breeder selects, raises and trains dogs for protection work and places them with families or professionals. The best ones also teach the new owner how to handle the dog.

Is a protection dog breeder the same as a trainer?

Not always. Some breeders sell puppies and leave the training to you. At TYR the dog is fully trained before it is placed, and a trainer stays with you at your home for the handover.

What breed do breeders use for protection dogs?

The German Shepherd is the most common choice, and the Belgian Malinois and the Rottweiler are also used. The breed matters less than the individual dog: its nerves, its obedience and how well it is controlled. The dogs we offer are German Shepherds.

Should I buy a puppy or a trained adult?

A puppy is a project that takes years and can go wrong. A trained adult already shows what it is. That is why TYR sells fully trained dogs, which you can watch work before you decide.

Do you deliver across the USA?

Yes. TYR is based in Portugal and delivers to all 50 states, with one of our trainers bringing the dog to your home.
